Most cheer guides stop at shoes and pom poms. That’s about a third of what a competitive cheerleader actually needs. There’s the makeup that holds under arena lights for eight hours. The hair products that keep a bun competition-tight through five routines. The wrist protection that’s a safety requirement, not an accessory. The hotel that’s two blocks from the venue instead of forty-five minutes away.
This guide covers every category — gear, protection, beauty, training equipment, and travel — with verified picks and direct booking links. Nothing on this page was ranked because of its commission rate.
For the cheerleader who has a bag, shoes, and bows already — or for the parent who doesn’t know where to start. These gift cards cover competition beauty, performance gear, and morning fuel.
8 Things to Handle Before Competition Day
Break In New Shoes Early
New cheer shoes need at least 3–4 full practices before competition day. A shoe that’s still stiff on the day creates risk for ankle issues during stunts. Order 3 weeks out minimum.
Do a Full Makeup Run-Through
Test your complete makeup routine at least once before competition. Confirm hold time, check for transfer, verify it photographs well. Don’t test new products on competition morning.
Pack Safety Gear Separately
Tiger Paws, ankle braces, KT Tape, and pre-wrap go in a dedicated small bag inside the main competition bag. Searching through a full bag during warm-up time is not the move.
Book Hotels the Day Registration Opens
Competition venue hotels fill within 48–72 hours of registration opening. Set a calendar reminder for the exact registration date. This is not an exaggeration.
Pack the Night Before
Nothing gets forgotten when bags are packed 12 hours in advance. Create a printed checklist specific to your athlete’s position and role. Run through it the night before, not competition morning.
Order Poms Early
Custom pom orders require a production window. In-stock metallic poms ship faster but still need lead time. Order earlier than feels necessary — competition weekend is not the time to be waiting on shipping.
Set a Competition Makeup Call Time
Makeup takes 45–60 minutes for a full competition look including lashes and setting. Build this into the morning timeline explicitly, before travel time and before warm-up call time.
Charge Everything the Night Before
Power bank, phone, earbuds, camera, bullhorn. Everything that needs a charge goes on a charger the night before departure. Add a phone charger to the competition bag as a permanent item.
