The Canadian side, in Ontario, has the classic postcard view — Horseshoe Falls seen head-on — along with the Fallsview casino towers, the Clifton Hill entertainment strip, and the Niagara Parkway running north along the gorge. The American side, in New York, gets you closer to the water at Niagara Falls State Park, with Cave of the Winds and Goat Island putting you within feet of Bridal Veil Falls. A short 20-minute drive from the falls on the Canadian side brings you to Niagara-on-the-Lake, a Victorian-era town surrounded by Ontario’s wine country and home to the Shaw Festival theatre. On the New York side, the quieter river towns of Lewiston and Youngstown offer historic sites and a slower pace. Crossing the border requires a passport or enhanced ID, so plan which side to prioritize — or budget time for both.
Planning Tips
- Budget at least 2-3 days, more if you want to properly explore both the Canadian and American sides plus a day trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake wine country.
- The Canadian side has the better view of the falls — Horseshoe Falls faces Canada, so most of the iconic photos and the Fallsview hotel towers are on the Ontario side. The American side gets you physically closer to the water.
- Bring a passport or enhanced driver’s license if you plan to cross the Rainbow Bridge between the US and Canadian sides — standard driver’s licenses aren’t sufficient for the border crossing.
- Marineland (Ontario) is closed and does not appear anywhere in this guide — it did not reopen for the 2025 season and remains shuttered. We verify current operating status on every listing.
Should I stay on the US or Canadian side of Niagara Falls?
The Canadian side has the better view (Horseshoe Falls faces Ontario) along with more hotels, dining, and entertainment at Fallsview and Clifton Hill. The US side puts you closer to the water at Niagara Falls State Park and is a good base if you’re not crossing the border. Many visitors do both as day trips.
Is Marineland still open?
No — Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario did not open for the 2025 season and remains closed as of this guide’s last check, with its animals being relocated. It doesn’t appear in our Things to Do guide for that reason.
