Getting to Know the Area

South Beach
Downtown & Brickell
Little Havana
Wynwood & Design District
Coconut Grove & Coral Gables
Sunny Isles & Bal Harbour

South Beach is the postcard image of Miami — Ocean Drive’s Art Deco hotels, Lincoln Road’s shopping, and the beach itself. Downtown and Brickell, just across the MacArthur Causeway, hold the glass-tower hotel and dining scene along with Bayside Marketplace. Little Havana, centered on Calle Ocho, is the city’s Cuban cultural heart. Wynwood and the Design District cover the mural-and-gallery arts scene and upscale shopping. Coconut Grove and Coral Gables, connected by tree-lined avenues, are quieter and more residential, with the Biltmore Hotel and Vizcaya as anchors. And Sunny Isles Beach and Bal Harbour, north of South Beach, hold most of the large all-suite oceanfront resorts.

Planning Tips

  • Budget at least 3-4 days. A day covers South Beach’s Art Deco district and beach alone; add time for Little Havana, Wynwood, and at least a half-day Everglades trip.
  • Book Michelin-recognized restaurants and popular hotels well in advance. Miami’s top chef-driven spots and Art Deco boutique hotels both fill up, especially in the winter high season.
  • Consider your neighborhood carefully. South Beach is the classic choice but can be loud and expensive; Brickell, Coconut Grove, and Coral Gables offer a calmer, often better-value alternative within easy reach.
  • A few well-known names have recently closed or are mid-transition. We verify current operating status on every listing in this guide, including major hotel and restaurant closures you may not have caught yet.

FAQ

How many days should I plan for a Miami trip?

3-5 days covers South Beach’s Art Deco district and beach, a Little Havana and Wynwood day, and time for at least one Everglades day trip — add more if you want to explore Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, or the Design District at a relaxed pace.

Is Miami Seaquarium still open?

No — it permanently closed in October 2025 after about 70 years. It doesn’t appear in our Things to Do guide for that reason.

How does NME choose which hotels, restaurants, and attractions to feature?

We verify each listing directly against its own official site and current operating status rather than relying on aggregator lists, and we exclude anything we can’t confirm is still open. Read more on our methodology page.
