Lake Tahoe straddles the California/Nevada line, and the two shores feel genuinely different. South Lake Tahoe and Stateline anchor the South Shore with casinos, the Heavenly Gondola, and the widest range of hotels. The West Shore (Homewood, Tahoma, Sunnyside) is Tahoe’s quiet side — small inns, state parks, and Emerald Bay. The North Shore runs from Tahoe City around to Incline Village, NV, mixing beach towns with a second, smaller casino district. Truckee, a historic railroad town just north of the lake, has become a destination of its own for dining and access to Northstar and Palisades Tahoe.

- Rent a car. Lake Tahoe’s 72-mile shoreline spans two states and several distinct towns — a car makes moving between them far easier than the limited local transit.
- Lake Tahoe has two very different peak seasons. Ski season (Dec-Mar) draws crowds to the resorts; summer (Jun-Sep) draws crowds to the beaches and Emerald Bay. Book lodging well ahead for either.
- Give Emerald Bay real time. It’s Tahoe’s single most iconic spot, with the Vikingsholm castle trail and some of the best views at the lake.
- Casinos are concentrated at Stateline and Incline Village, NV — worth factoring in if nightlife is part of your trip.
