- Pick a neighborhood before you pick a hotel. Midtown and Times Square put you closest to Broadway and major sights but are the busiest and priciest; the Upper East/West Sides are quieter and closer to the museums and Central Park; SoHo/Tribeca/the Village suit travelers who want a downtown, boutique feel; Brooklyn hotels trade a subway ride for lower rates and skyline views.
- The Roosevelt Hotel, Excelsior Hotel, and NoMo SoHo are all closed and don’t appear in this guide for that reason — double-check any older recommendation you find elsewhere.
- Grand Hyatt New York is now Hyatt Grand Central New York. The property remains open and bookable but faces possible future redevelopment, so it’s worth checking current status before a far-out booking.
- Book Midtown and Times Square hotels well in advance for major events — Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, New Year’s Eve, and the December holiday season sell out first and at a premium.
What happened to the Roosevelt Hotel and the Grand Hyatt New York?
The Roosevelt Hotel is closed and does not appear in this guide. Grand Hyatt New York has rebranded to Hyatt Grand Central New York and remains open, though it faces possible future redevelopment.
Which NYC neighborhood is best for first-time visitors?
Midtown (near Times Square, Broadway, and Rockefeller Center) puts you closest to the most-visited sights, though it’s also the busiest and most expensive. The Upper West and Upper East Sides are quieter, walkable to Central Park and the major museums, and often better value.
