Getting to Know the Area
Busch Gardens Corridor
Richmond Road / Bypass Road
Jamestown
Yorktown
Colonial Williamsburg’s 301-acre Historic Area and adjoining Merchants Square shopping district sit at the heart of town, walkable from many of the closest hotels and B&Bs. East of downtown, Busch Gardens and Water Country USA anchor a corridor of family-oriented chain hotels. Richmond Road and Bypass Road run the length of town with the bulk of national chain hotels and restaurants. The Colonial Parkway connects the Historic Area to Jamestown (the original 1607 settlement site) to the southwest and Yorktown (site of the Revolutionary War’s final battle) to the east — both make easy half-day or full-day trips as part of the same “Historic Triangle” visit.
Planning Tips
- Budget at least 2-3 days for the Historic Triangle. A full day covers Colonial Williamsburg alone; add a half-day each for Jamestown and Yorktown if you want to see all three.
- A combo ticket saves money. Colonial Williamsburg and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation both sell multi-site passes if you plan to visit more than one attraction.
- Busch Gardens and Water Country USA are seasonal. Check current-year operating calendars before you book, especially outside the summer months.
- Stay inside the Historic Area for the full experience. The Colonial Williamsburg-operated properties (Williamsburg Inn, Lodge, Colonial Houses) put you steps from the Historic Area itself, while Richmond Rd/Bypass Rd chain hotels are a short drive away and generally less expensive.

How many days should I plan for a Williamsburg trip?
2-4 days covers Colonial Williamsburg, a day at Busch Gardens, and time for Jamestown and/or Yorktown — add more if you want to see all of the Historic Triangle at a relaxed pace.
What’s the difference between Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown?
Colonial Williamsburg is a restored 18th-century colonial capital with costumed interpreters; Jamestown is the site of the original 1607 English settlement, with both a living-history museum and the actual archaeological site; Yorktown is where the Revolutionary War’s final battle was fought in 1781. Together they form the “Historic Triangle.”
How does NME choose which hotels, restaurants, and attractions to feature?
We verify each listing directly against its own official site and current operating status rather than relying on aggregator lists, and we exclude anything we can’t confirm is still open. Read more on our methodology page.
