Know the Area Before You Book
- Historic Downtown: The peninsula’s King Street, French Quarter, and Ansonborough neighborhoods — the biggest concentration of boutique hotels, house museums, and restaurants, all walkable.
- South of Broad: The residential district at the peninsula’s tip, home to the Battery and a handful of small historic inns.
- Mount Pleasant: Across the Ravenel Bridge — Patriots Point, Shem Creek’s dockside seafood restaurants, and mid-scale chain hotels.
- Isle of Palms & Sullivan’s Island: Barrier-island beach towns close to downtown; Sullivan’s Island has no hotels at all, so it’s a vacation-rental-only stay.

Should I stay downtown or on one of the islands?
Downtown puts you within walking distance of the historic district’s sites, restaurants, and King Street shopping. The islands (Isle of Palms, Kiawah, Seabrook, Folly Beach) put you on the beach, generally a 20-40 minute drive from downtown. See our hotels guide for both.

How far are the plantations and islands from downtown Charleston?
The Ashley River plantations (Magnolia, Middleton Place, Drayton Hall) are about 20-30 minutes from downtown. Mount Pleasant and Isle of Palms/Sullivan’s Island are 15-30 minutes across the Ravenel Bridge. Kiawah and Seabrook are roughly 40 minutes south.
