Seafood is the signature category across the whole Outer Banks — decades-old family seafood houses and raw bars run the length of the islands, from Kitty Hawk down through Hatteras Village. Duck and Corolla carry the region’s fine-dining and soundfront scene, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head have the biggest concentration of casual local favorites, historic Manteo has its own small downtown food scene distinct from the beach towns, and Ocracoke Island — ferry-only, at the southern end — punches well above its size for a tiny island. Duck is also where Duck Donuts got its start, and the original location is still open. We checked each restaurant directly against its own official site and current open status rather than a generic aggregator list.

Dining Tips for This Area

  • Many Outer Banks restaurants close for part of the off-season. This is a seasonal beach economy — some Corolla, Duck, and island restaurants shut down entirely from late fall through early spring. Always confirm before a winter trip.
  • Book fine dining well ahead in summer. Duck and Corolla’s soundfront restaurants fill up fast during peak weeks.
  • Ocracoke Island’s food scene is small but real. A handful of spots serve the whole island, so plan around the ferry schedule as much as the restaurant’s hours.
  • The Outer Banks dining scene changes fast. Every restaurant above was checked for current open status, but call ahead to confirm before a special trip.

FAQ

Where did Duck Donuts actually start?

In Duck, NC, in 2007 — the original location is still open and is the namesake for the now-national donut chain.

Where should I eat if I want a classic Outer Banks seafood experience?

Sam & Omie’s (Nags Head, since 1937) and Awful Arthur’s Oyster Bar (Kill Devil Hills) are longtime local institutions, alongside newer favorites like Basnight’s Lone Cedar Cafe.

Do restaurants stay open year-round in the Outer Banks?

Not all of them. This is a seasonal beach economy, and some restaurants — especially in Corolla, Duck, and the smaller islands — close for part of the off-season. Always check directly before a winter or early-spring trip.

How does NME choose which restaurants to feature?

We verify each restaurant directly against its own official site and current open status rather than relying on aggregator lists, and we exclude anything we can’t confirm is still open. Read more on our methodology page.
