Planning Tips for This Area
- Decide South Beach vs. everywhere else first. South Beach puts you in walking distance of Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road but comes with noise and valet-only parking; Brickell, Coconut Grove, and Coral Gables are calmer and often better value.
- Several big names are mid-transition. The Mandarin Oriental is being fully rebuilt and won’t reopen until 2030, W South Beach is becoming a Waldorf Astoria in 2027, and SLS South Beach is closed for redevelopment — double check before booking around any of these names.
- Sunny Isles Beach and Bal Harbour are the quieter oceanfront alternative to South Beach, with large all-suite resorts and a shorter walk to the sand.
- Book Coral Gables or Coconut Grove if you want walkable dining without the South Beach scene — Miracle Mile and CocoWalk both put you steps from restaurants.
Is the Mandarin Oriental, Miami still open?
No — it closed in May 2025 and the original tower was demolished in April 2026. A new flagship hotel and residences are being built on the site, but it isn’t expected to reopen until 2030.
What happened to the W South Beach?
It’s in the process of ending its Marriott affiliation and reopening as the Waldorf Astoria Miami Beach (Hilton), targeted for Winter 2027 — it isn’t bookable under either name as a current stay right now.
